Tibenham’s War Memorial, which stands in All Saints’ churchyard near the entrance porch, was originally purchased by public subscription. With the date of the centenary of Armistice Day approaching, the Parish Council decided to take responsibility for the maintenance of the War Memorial, starting with a professional clean.

    

 

We contacted Bierton and Woods, monumental stonemasons based in Scole, and they cleaned off the years of lichen and polished the marble. There may be some parishioners who remember the memorial as it originally was, but for most of us it was a rather dull and uninspiring piece of stone … but now it looks completely different. It is a lovely piece of white marble with blue-green veining. Well worth a visit.

 

 

   

 

 

 

While they were cleaning the memorial, the stonemasons made temporary repairs to some of the letters which were lost during the extreme cold earlier this year. They explained that once the letters start to come away, we can expect more to disappear in the near future. They have offered to redo all the lettering, and we will take them up on this when budgets allow, over the next year or two. Once this work is completed, the new lettering should last another 50 or so years.
